Cordless phones have been around for decades. We can walk all over the house, put away laundry or groceries, even pull weeds out in the yard while talking on our cordless phone. That’s much better than being tied to a five or ten foot cord, isn’t it? Now we can wander up to 300 feet or more away from the base and still be in range to talk and listen clearly.

Cordless phones are what most people use in their homes now, though you can still get a corded phone that will work through your phone jack even during a power outage. So, how do cordless phones work and why do we still need them?

A cordless phone is basically a combination telephone and radio transmitter. Its two parts are the base and a handset that you hold to your ear and speak into. The base receives incoming calls through the phone wires behind the phone jack, converts the electrical signal into an FM radio signal and broadcasts that signal to the handset. The handset receives the radio signal from the base, and then converts it into the sound that you hear – i.e. your callers voice. Through a series of conversions of electrical signals into sound and back again your caller can also hear you on another FM radio frequency. The base and the hand set operate on two different frequencies called a frequency pair, or duplex frequency, which enables you to talk and listen at the same time without pauses or interference.

Now cordless phone technology is part of the whole package of home, business and PC phones. It is now possible to tie cordless, mobile and IP telephony together to have the best of all of them. The home business as well as the Fortune 500 super company all benefit from such innovation. Watch for more possibilities in this fascinating industry.
