Do you Practice Proper Mobile Phone Etiquette?

To many of us in the developed western world it would appear that everyone and their dog now has a mobile phone. But it should be remembered that around half of the world’s population have never made or received a telephone call.

This really highlights the technological gulf that exists between the developed countries and the developing countries.

But many people think that mobile phones are actually more irritating than they are useful. Have you recently used any form of public transport?

I routinely travel by train to and from London and I’m forced to listen to various telephone conversations that, before the mobile phone revolution, would have never taken place. On my homeward journey I regularly listen to people calling their partners just to tell them: ‘I’m on the train’. And every day I have to listen to the same people making the same pointless calls, just because they can. What did they use before mobile phones, carrier pigeons?

I’m also forced to listen to the inane conversations of teenagers that make no sense whatsoever. Often, they seem to be discussing their boring, empty lives or scathingly criticizing an alleged friend’s dress sense or discussing boyfriends in unflattering terms. In one conversation that was heard recently a young lady described a recent sexual experience with a young man in far too much detail. Everyone in the carriage was squirming in their seats with embarrassment as she proceeded to describe her experience, blow by blow.

Inconsiderately forcing people to listen to one side of your mobile phone conversation is one way in which modern mobile phone use is anti-social. Another is those incredibly irritating and often far too loud ringtones that are supposed to sound like a popular tune but don’t.

Everyone needs to be reminded of how lucky they are to own a mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone is not a god given right, it’s a privelige that should not be provided to people who use it to describe their sex lives, loudly.
